  • Cannes city hall has just installed emergency call points in public spaces to enable residents and visitors to report a direct threat.

  • "This device allows immediate awareness of the threat", explains David Lisnard, the mayor of Cannes.

  • The city aims to install two other terminals during the year.

On October 29, 2020, at 8:54 am precisely, the emergency call terminal on avenue Jean-Médecin was triggered by a witness.

Four minutes later, the municipal police arrived on site to neutralize the terrorist from Notre-Dame-de-L'Assomption cathedral.

“This device allows immediate awareness of the threat.

And what happened in Nice obviously reinforced our idea of deploying it, ”explains David Lisnard.

The mayor LR of Cannes has in turn installed these videophones directly connected to the municipal video surveillance center in the public space.

The first four are operational at the SNCF station in the city center, in front of the steps of the Palais des Festivals, opposite Macé beach and in the center of Bocca.

And two others should also be set up, during the year, between the university, which is due to open soon, and the future multiplex, still at Bocca, and also in the Ranguin district.

In two months, 135 trips on 63 terminals in Nice

“These alarm buttons triggered by a simple press from the user and equipped with a microphone and a video camera” each cost the community 7,000 euros.

“Nearby surveillance cameras are immediately pointed in the direction of the report.

This allows a very rapid resolution of doubt and an intervention within three minutes if necessary ”, explains David Lisnard.

The system comes, according to the elected official, in addition to other initiatives taken as part of a plan to prevent the terrorist risk.

The town hall recalls, for example, that it has been deploying "since the summer of 2016 fixed or portable alarm buttons in public establishments, schools, nurseries, places of worship and potentially vulnerable businesses".

To date, 355 of these devices have been installed.

And so are added to the new video alert terminals.

In Nice, 63 have been installed since 2019. Between January and February 2021, they recorded 135 trips which represents just over one per month and per device.

These triggers were followed twenty-two times by a drafting of the municipal police.

Six generated an intervention and, in three cases, there were arrests.
