Withdrawn from politics since 2016 but still very popular on the right one year before the next presidential election, Nicolas Sarkozy became on Monday the first former president of the Fifth Republic sentenced to prison: one year for corruption and influence peddling in the so-called "eavesdropping" affair.
The former head of state, who has always claimed to have never committed "the slightest act of corruption", will appeal against his three-year prison sentence, two of which are suspended - a flexible sentence.
