China News Service reporter Guo Jun

"The Mainland, especially the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, has many opportunities and large room for development. It can become a big stage for Hong Kong young people to fully demonstrate their talents." Dr. Xu Zhengjie from Hong Kong said in an interview with a reporter from Chinanews.com.

In recent years, with the continuous economic and social development and progress of the Mainland, more and more Hong Kong students choose to study in the Mainland.

According to the Ministry of Education, there are more than 10,000 Hong Kong high school graduates applying for mainland universities in 2020. At present, there are 23,200 Hong Kong and Macau students studying in mainland universities and research institutes, of which 16,000 are Hong Kong students. The number continues rise.

Xu Zhengjie, who just graduated from the Ophthalmology Center of Sun Yat-Sen University last year, and Lin Xinying, who is in the junior year of Jinan University, are just one of the members of this group of Hong Kong going north to school.

When the reporter met Xu Zhengjie in the new campus of the Zhongshan Ophthalmology Center in Zhujiang New Town, Guangzhou, he had just finished an operation and used his short free time in the afternoon to chat with reporters about his experience of studying in the Mainland.

More than ten years ago, Xu Zhengjie came to Guangzhou from Hong Kong and entered the clinical medicine major of Jinan University with English teaching.

After graduating from undergraduate, he returned to the University of Hong Kong to study for a master's degree.

Later, he originally planned to stay in Hong Kong as a doctor after graduation, so he chose to go north again and enter the Sun Yat-sen University Eye Center to study for a doctorate.

Now, he has successfully graduated and became a doctor in Zhongshan Eye Center.

Recalling the experience of studying in these years, Xu Zhengjie lamented the rapid development of the mainland. "When I first came to Guangzhou, many high-rise buildings in the CBD of Zhujiang New City had not yet been completed, and there were dusty construction sites everywhere. In just ten years, the prosperity of Zhujiang New City is now Comparable to Hong Kong Central."

The continuous improvement of the education environment in the Mainland also impressed Xu Zhengjie deeply.

Jinan University is an international university with distinctive characteristics. In his class, his classmates come from foreign countries, the mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. "Everyone has different backgrounds, but they are very willing to communicate." Xu Zhengjie said, local students also invited him When I went to eat at home, my classmates’ families were also very friendly.

Education methods and models in the Mainland are constantly evolving.

For example, he said that during his Ph.D., he had more contact opportunities with his supervisors. The supervisors paid great attention to practice. Both the curriculum and clinical learning were taught by the supervisors. "My doctoral supervisor, Professor Liang Xiaoling, is from Zhongshan Ophthalmology The director of the Blindness Prevention Office of the center spares no effort in the problem of eye diseases in the mainland and backward areas at home and abroad. When she has free time, she will take us to the surrounding areas to investigate and participate in free clinic activities, and explain to us the local people's livelihood and health issues." Xu Zhengjie said I believe that in addition to clinical work in the future, he can also make more contributions to ophthalmic public health from the perspective of public health.

“Zhongshan Eye Center is the leading ophthalmology hospital in China. Well-known experts and professors at home and abroad often come to give lectures and share experiences, and provide a good growth environment for young doctors. It is the dream of many doctors to study and work here.” Xu Zhengjie told The reporter chose to return to Guangzhou for further studies not only because of the status of Zhongshan Eye Center in the industry, but also because he believes that the development of the medical industry in the Mainland is undergoing a qualitative leap, and people’s demand for medical services and disease prevention is increasing. The future prospects are unlimited.

Nowadays, in addition to outpatient clinics, Xu Zhengjie also has many tasks every day, including reviewing image data, performing operations, etc. "Although he is busy, I don't feel hard. Both medical staff and patients are abundant and rich in resources. I want to take advantage of it. I’m still young, learn as much as possible and improve myself as soon as possible."

Compared with Xu Zhengjie, who has already learned to "as a teacher" and entered the workplace, Lin Xinying, who is only 22 years old, is currently studying human resource management in the School of Management of Jinan University.

However, when it comes to the academic experience in the Mainland in recent years, Lin also has something to say.

"When I chose to study at Jinan University, I first valued it as a key university in the mainland and the highest institution for overseas Chinese. It enrolls a lot of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students every year, and the learning atmosphere should be good. At the same time, I want to experience the kind of leaving my home in another place. The life of living in school," Lin Xinying said.

After entering school, she was quite nervous at first, and talked with her family on the phone every day.

After all, I have arrived in a new environment, and I am worried about whether I can adapt to school life, how to get along with my roommates, and how to meet new friends.

However, this anxiety quickly diminished.

"The most impressive thing is the freshman training camp. There are many lectures. Senior brothers and sisters will share with us the experience of college life. More than 600 freshmen play games and do tasks together, and everyone will soon be integrated." She said.

The school is very concerned about enrollment.

All foreign enrollment students must study at Sihai Academy in the first year of enrollment. This is the "academy system" teaching approach developed by JJU specifically for the undergraduate general education stage of foreign enrollment. The school has specially equipped tutors for foreign enrollment students. After the freshman year, Students choose their majors according to their own interests and expertise.

"Sihai Academy, the name sounds like a family from all over the world." Lin Xinying said.

The Sihai Academy is completely tailored to the needs of overseas students, and on this basis, it helps them complete the transition to unfamiliar culture and environment in the first year of university.

Speaking of the different feelings of studying in the Mainland and Hong Kong, Lin Xinying said that the deepest feeling is that the mathematics and computer courses here are more difficult. Fortunately, at the end of each expiration, the school will organize the students to review together. Everyone volunteers to sign up and get results. The senior brothers and sisters will answer your questions for free, so the learning efficiency will be greatly improved.

In addition, the teacher is also very concerned about the students, and will leave contact information, set up a course group, and interact with students.

After three years of university, Lin Xinying studied excellently and is keen to participate in the learning projects carried out in the two places.

She specifically mentioned that she participated in the summer internship program organized by the Hong Kong and Macau Youth Home and the Hong Kong Bairen Fund last year. "This is my first internship in the Mainland. Thank you very much for this internship program." Lin Xinying said, working as an operating assistant in the Makerspace. In the past month, she came into contact with many young people from Hong Kong and Macau who came to Guangzhou to start a business, and learned how to help these entrepreneurs register a company, find and arrange office space.

During her internship in Makerspace, she also planned a college student entrepreneurship salon by herself, and invited many college students to participate, which was very rewarding.

Since then, Lin Xinying also used her spare time to intern in a new retail start-up founded by Hong Kong youth in Guangzhou, responsible for the company's self-media platform and live broadcast delivery.

"The first time I participated in the live broadcast, I was very nervous. I didn't know what to say when facing the camera alone. I was afraid that I would not behave badly. My friends also came to the live broadcast room to interact with me to ease my nervousness." Lin Xinying recalled with a smile Said, "The more difficult period is a week before the broadcast, but everything needs to be persisted. This is also a very good experience. In fact, no matter what you do, when you face it for the first time, you are a little worried. These worries will diminish with experience time after time, and everything is expensive to persist!” This internship experience also gave her a deeper understanding of the operation and development of the Internet sales platform in the Mainland.

"Through these two-stage internships, I have learned that Hong Kong, Macao and young people have a lot of room for development in the Mainland, and there are more opportunities. In addition, the government departments provide a lot of preferential policies and benefits for young people from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. These have strengthened me. Confidence in employment in cities in the Greater Bay Area after graduation.” Lin Xinying believes that the state has invested a lot in the Greater Bay Area and its development is particularly good, which makes her look forward to the future of the Greater Bay Area. “I think the Greater Bay Area will be An important bridge for the integrated development of our new generation of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao youths."

She said that after graduating from university, she would first consider employment related to her undergraduate major to see if it suits her abilities and interests.

In addition, the development of new media in the mainland is very rapid nowadays, and she also has internship experience in this area. She expressed her willingness to try this opportunity.

February 18th coincided with the second anniversary of the implementation of the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan". Talking about the future development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Lin Xinying encouraged young people to give themselves more opportunities to seize the development opportunities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area .

Xu Zhengjie said that the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has shortened the communication distance, allowing major cities in the region to complement each other.

The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has many opportunities and great room for development. He encouraged young people in Hong Kong to explore new horizons here.
