Mayla Phoebe de Rezende and Sofia Albuquerck never considered themselves boys.

For a few weeks now, the two 19-year-olds have been going through life as women - and according to the British media, they are the first twins to have undergone sex reassignment at the same time.

In mid-February, the two were operated on by the same doctor on two consecutive days.

"The first time showering after I was released from the hospital - magical", Mayla is quoted by the British "Mirror" as saying.

Until the operation, she could not believe that her dream would come true.

“I couldn't believe it when I woke up,” said the 19-year-old.

Now she and her sister are recovering from their operations.

There were no complications.

“I'm still in the process of realizing it.

I no longer feel uncomfortable when I lie or sit.

It is wonderful."

For several years, the twins received hormonal treatment before they underwent an operation.

To finance the interventions, her grandfather even sold a house, according to Mayla.

“He's a very open person,” says the granddaughter.

She now wants to study medicine so that she can buy her grandparents a new house and “repay the favor”.

In general, her family had always stood behind them: "They always knew that we were girls." Concern about how the two would be treated by others was still noticeable.

“Her fear was never that we were who we are, but that others would hurt us,” said the 19-year-old.

It was actually "difficult" at school - they were called "gay" and ignored by the girls because they found them "ugly".

"Some of my classmates even threw books at my head," says Mayla.

She and Sofia had always known that they were born in the wrong body.

Even as a child she had only one wish when blowing out the candles on her birthday cakes: "I asked God to make me a little girl."

"Still afraid that some guy on the street will hit me"

She and Sofia heard about sex reassignment surgery when they were ten years old.

It should take nine years before they take the step into reality - also because the waiting list in the public health system is “too long” and there is only one private clinic in their home in Blumenau in southern Brazil that offers the procedure.

“A lot of trans women give up,” Mayla said.

The two girls plan to adopt children in the future and start their own families.

But, despite the joy of the dream come true: She cannot live without fear, says Mayla.

"I'm still afraid that some guy on the street will insult or hit me."
