  • The city of Bruges in the suburbs of Bordeaux is launching its urban mini-forest project this week.

Twelve will be planted in the next few years.

  • Two firsts will be 300 and 600 square meters.

They will be made up of trees that "grow 10 times faster and take up one meter per year".

  • No street furniture will be built in these open spaces.

They will grow like mushrooms.

Figuratively and maybe soon literally.

The city of Bruges, in the suburbs of Bordeaux, is launching this week its mini-urban forests project as part of the metropolitan operation "1 million trees planted in the territory".

In all, twelve will see the light of day in the months and years to come in this town.

The objective is to create spaces of freshness to fight against global warming.

They will "reduce the temperature by several degrees and improve the quality of life, especially during a heat wave", explains the town hall.

What do these urban mini-forests look like?

Trees with "10 times faster growth"

The concept is very simple: condense a wide variety of trees, three to five plants per square meter on a prepared plot.

For example, a plot of 300m² rue Jules Ladoumègue and 600m² rue Henri Bergson in Bruges.

It is made up of trees that "grow 10 times faster and take up one meter per year", specifies Sébastien Bringtown, deputy mayor for living environment and mobility.

Other plants will also be planted, they respect a certain height like trees.

On the other hand, the town hall “will not install additional street furniture in these mini-forests, but it will take into account the already existing developments such as on the Bergson site each time.

“These various sites will not be closed, as can the squares or public gardens.

Sébastien Bringtown adds that "there will be no automatic watering" for example to respect the ecological approach of the project.

For the moment, the municipality plans to plant two mini-forests per year but this could accelerate, the overall objective may be revised upwards over the term of office.

The operation, co-financed by Bordeaux Métropole and the town hall of Bruges (one third), amounts to a little over 430,000 euros.
