The controversy surrounding Sia's first film,

Music

, does not calm down.

Accused of disrespecting people with autism by casting her “muse” Maddie Ziegler as Music, a non-verbal autistic teenager, the singer finds herself targeted by a petition demanding that the two Golden Globe nominations be everything simply withdrawn by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organizes the awards ceremony.

The film was nominated for Best Musical / Comedy Film and Best Musical / Comedy Film Actress for Kate Hudson.

“True autistic people were ignored in the casting process when Sia picked neurotypical Maddie Ziegler to play this autistic Music character, because she 'can't do a project without her.'

Additionally, the film features some whimsical musical sequences that take place in the mind of Music, which use strobe lights and rapid camera movements, making it unobservable for many people with autism and epilepsy.

Sia made sure that a majority of us will not be able to watch it, ”reads this petition, shared on Change.org and already signed by more than 67,000 people.

Listening to the wrong people

After initially refusing criticism, Sia said earlier this month that she was "sorry" to have listened to the "wrong people" when she made her film and that she did not want to shock the sensibilities of no one.

Questioned in the petition on the way in which Music is represented when she is tied up during a crisis, the interpreter of

Chandelier

promised that her film would be preceded by a warning that she does not "validate the use of coercion on autistic people ”.

Nevertheless, according to the

LA Times

, several autism awareness associations, which were able to watch

Music

after its announcement, claim that this mention is still not present in the film.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has so far not reacted to the controversy, but the cancellation of a nomination remains unlikely.
