Facebook's decision to block news content in Australia this Thursday is a retaliatory measure by the famous social network against a bill that intends to force the tech giants to pay newspaper companies for the content they broadcast on their platforms.

The Australian initiative is widely followed around the world, at a time when the media are suffering in a digital economy where advertising revenues are increasingly captured by large technology firms.
