Last week, two positive cases for the South African variant of the coronavirus were detected in the area of Bagnères-de-Luchon, in the south of Haute-Garonne.

To limit the spread of the virus in this valley of the Pyrenees, three schools in the area were closed and a massive screening organized in the 33 municipalities of the Pique and Neste d'Oô valley over the weekend.

After tests carried out on 300 students and their parents on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the entire population was invited by the services of the prefecture and the regional health agency to do a PCR test.

In total, 1,581 tests were carried out, or 25% of the population concerned.

“The analysis of these samples confirmed the detection of 22 people infected with the Covid-19 virus, of which 13 samples are still being characterized, only 1 South African or Brazilian variant and 2 English variants have been confirmed.

The low positivity rate (1.4%) is a reassuring indicator as to the level of circulation of variants in this valley, ”indicates ARS Occitanie.

People who test positive have been asked to respect a period of isolation and will be followed by home nurses.
