The strict entry rules for people from so-called virus variant areas are expected to be extended by two weeks.

This provides for a draft that the federal cabinet wants to decide on Tuesday.

The ban was initially only imposed until February 17.

It affects countries where mutated variants of the coronavirus that are more contagious have already spread widely.

In addition, the measures taken there to contain the pandemic are taken into account in the classification.

Currently, almost only Germans and foreigners residing in Germany are allowed to enter from these areas.

There are also special rules for medical staff, transit passengers and the movement of goods.

After Great Britain, Portugal and South Africa belonged to this category, the Czech Republic and large parts of the Austrian state of Tyrol were added last Sunday.

In order to enforce the ban for these neighboring regions as well, Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU), in consultation with Bavaria and Saxony, ordered stationary controls at these border sections.

There are exceptions for commuters from certain sectors who want to come from Tyrol or the Czech Republic.

However, they are not released from the obligation to test either.
