After evidence of the British variant of the corona virus in a construction worker, four residential buildings in Hamm, North Rhine-Westphalia, with up to 140 residents are under quarantine.

According to the city, a Bulgarian assembly worker tested positive for the more contagious virus mutation called B.1.1.7 on Monday and has been in domestic isolation with his wife and another family since then.

The four apartment buildings at four different locations in the city are sealed off for the time being.

Four mobile test teams were also on the go on Tuesday to carry out PCR tests on all possible residents and contact persons, which are then to be examined for the British variant.

Operations manager Detlef Burrichter reported that 78 PCR tests had already been carried out by night on Monday.

A special analysis process (sequencing) is now being used to determine whether further cases of the English virus variant can be detected.

According to previous knowledge, it could be necessary to test up to 140 people in the four residential buildings in question in Hammer West and in Bockum-Hövel.

The assembly worker, who was already suffering from Covid-19, and his wife, as well as another also sick family in the same house, were isolated in different apartments, said Burrichter.
