Russia's capital Moscow just missed a record after days of snowfall and storms.

On Sunday morning, the snow cover was 59 centimeters high, reported the Interfax agency, citing a state meteorology center.

That was the second highest value since measurements began in 1879. Only in 1956 was the snow even higher at 60 centimeters.

In the coming days, the meteorologists hardly expect any fresh snow.

Around 70,000 workers are meanwhile busy clearing the snow from the streets of Europe's largest metropolis.

According to Moscow's deputy mayor Pyotr Biryukov, five days are planned for this.

Biryukov also promised to set up refreshment stands on Moscow's motorway ring for drivers stuck in traffic jams due to the weather.

At the city's three airports, more than 80 flights were delayed and some were canceled on Sunday.

According to disaster control, several building roofs collapsed under the snow load.

Two people died.
