A victory against the “illegal and dehumanizing” practices of the tabloids.

It is in these terms that Meghan Markle spoke of the court decision of the High Court of London.

As reported by the

Guardian

, Judge Mark Warby, in charge of the case, ruled in favor of the Duchess of Sussex, saying the publication by the

Mail on Sunday

and the MailOnline site (owned by the Associated Newspapers group), in 2019, excerpts from a private letter she wrote and sent to her father, Thomas Markle, violated her privacy.

Last month, lawyers for Prince Harry's wife asked the courts for summary judgment.

They claimed that there was "no real prospect" for those responsible for the publications to emerge victorious from the trial.

The judge clearly agreed as he said: “Taken as a whole, these disclosures were clearly excessive and therefore illegal.

There is no chance that a different judgment will be given after a trial ”.

“The complainant reasonably expected the contents of the letter to remain private.

The articles violated that reasonable expectation, ”he added.

A fight far from over

If she emerges a winner from this first battle, Meghan Markle is not at the end of her fight.

Another trial awaits her, to determine if she wrote the mail addressed to her father alone or not.

If it is "of minor significance in the global context" according to Judge Warby, justice will still have to rule on this part of the case.

Defense attorneys indeed claim that she wrote the five-page letter with Jason Knauf, the Sussexes' former communications director.

It would not therefore be the sole holder of the “copyright” of the mail.

“I am grateful to the courts for holding Associated Newspapers and

The Mail on Sunday

accountable for their illegal and dehumanizing practices.

For these media, it's a game, for me and for so many others, it's real life, real relationships and real sadness.

The damage they have caused and continue to cause runs deep, ”Meghan Markle said in a statement.
