At the beginning of the corona pandemic, more than 9,000 patients recovering from the virus infection were discharged from hospitals to nursing homes in New York State.

This is based on new documents that the AP news agency received on Thursday.

The number is over 40 percent higher than the number previously published by the New York Department of Health.

Behind patient discharge to nursing homes is a controversial order that was abandoned after critics branded it as a pandemic accelerator.

The administration of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has denied that the March 25 order contributed to illness and death in retirement homes.

In the past few weeks, the Cuomo government had already admitted under pressure that the total number of long-term nursing home residents who died in connection with the coronavirus is higher than previously reported.

Instead of 8,500 people, almost 15,000 were killed in the course of an infection.

The order from the end of March 2020 was aimed at relieving hospitals overcrowded with corona patients.

Nursing home associations expressed criticism of this.

They accused New York State of contributing to the potential spread of the virus - at a time when New York was already recording the highest death toll in nursing homes in the US.
