The city of San Francisco's school authorities recently decided to rename half a dozen schools.
Those schools were previously named after George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, perhaps the two greatest American presidents, after the Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson, who lived in San Francisco for a time, after Francis Scott Key, the author of the American national anthem, and after James Russell Lowell, a 19th century poet and staunch opponent of slavery.
