An ice swimmer rescued from a lake by the Berlin fire brigade died in the hospital.

This was said by a police spokesman.

The 43-year-old was rescued on Wednesday after a two-and-a-half hour search from the icy “carp pond” in Treptower Park.

He was resuscitated by an ambulance and came to the hospital with severe hypothermia, where he later died.

According to the police, the ice bather had dug holes in the frozen carp pond together with a 44-year-old man and two women aged 21 and 55.

Then the ice baths went into the water.

The 43-year-old got under water and did not appear again.

At times, 50 people were deployed during the rescue operation.

Only two hours and 40 minutes after submerging, fire service divers were initially able to recover the unconscious man still alive.

He only wore swimming trunks in the icy water.

The police assumed an accident.

The fire brigade warned against walking on ice surfaces and appealed to people not to be reckless.

"Bathing in the ice is life-threatening," said the spokesman.

Parents should educate their children about the dangers.
