A Covid patient started a fire and caused panic in a hospital in the southern Spanish city of Cádiz while trying to escape.

The 63-year-old man set fire to his mattress in his room on the sixth floor of the Puerta del Mar University Hospital on Wednesday evening, reported the newspaper "La Voz de Cádiz", citing the authorities.

He wanted to cause chaos and wanted to take advantage of it to escape unnoticed.

But the plan went wrong: The alleged arsonist was arrested in the hospital.

He was now housed in the high-security wing of another hospital in Cadiz, it said.

The chaos caused by the man was considerable: the flames shot out of several windows and also worried the neighbors of the hospital.

According to media reports, the fifth and seventh floors of the clinic had to be completely evacuated in addition to the sixth floor.

The fire could be extinguished relatively quickly.
