After 33 days on a desert island, three Cubans have been rescued by the US Coast Guard.

The two men and a woman had waved flags to attract a helicopter's attention.

According to the authority, the Coast Guard helicopter was on a routine flight off the island chain of the Florida Keys.

Helicopter pilot Mike Allert told the broadcaster WPLG that water, food and a radio set were initially dropped over the uninhabited Bahama Island between Key West and Cuba on Monday.

The group was finally rescued on Tuesday.

The three rescued reported that their boat overturned in rough seas and that they could swim to the island, the coast guard tweeted.

According to media reports, the three said they ate coconuts, mussels and rats.

It is unclear whether the group was trying to get to the United States or whether it was simply in distress, said Brandon Murray of the Coast Guard of the newspaper "South Florida Sentinel".

"I don't remember ever rescuing people who were stuck on an island for more than a month," he said.
