  • The English variant is present on Breton territory with 104 cases that have been identified so far.

  • The Brazilian and South African variants have also appeared in Brittany where six cases have been diagnosed.

  • Despite a declining incidence rate, the number of hospitalizations has reached a record high in the region.

We already knew that the English variant was actively circulating in Brittany.

But the Regional Health Agency (ARS) tells us this Wednesday that the Brazilian and South African variants of Covid-19 have appeared in the region.

To date, 36 clusters representing 110 cases of coronavirus with variant have been identified in Brittany.

"This is mainly the British variant but six cases of the South African or Brazilian variant were also detected within these clusters," said ARS Bretagne in a press release.

These grouped cases have been detected for the most part in schools (20 clusters including 14 in Ille-et-Vilaine) as well as in nursing homes (seven clusters) and health establishments (five clusters).

All patients carrying a variant of the coronavirus were placed in isolation for a period of seven days, and ten days for those who contracted the Brazilian and South African variants.

"The patient carrying a variant should be made aware of the risk of increased contagiousness and the importance of particularly strict compliance with isolation and barrier gestures", remind the health authorities.

A record number of hospitalizations in the region

According to the latest report transmitted Monday evening by the ARS, the incidence rate has fallen in recent days in Brittany and now stands at 107.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The number of people hospitalized, however, continues to increase to reach the record number of 751 hospitalizations, including 50 in intensive care (+13 compared to Friday).

Seventeen new deaths were also recorded over the weekend in the region, bringing the death toll to 983 since the start of the health crisis.
