After the fire in a large power plant in Nuremberg, people in some apartment blocks have to endure at 10 to 15 degrees.

The energy supplier N-Ergie said it had reduced its heat output on Tuesday because the district heating supply was restricted in two parts of the city after the power plant failed.

About 15,000 people are affected.

The city of Nuremberg declared a disaster.

In addition, all residents in the two affected districts are asked to turn their heating down to 15 degrees and save hot water, said the chairman of the board of N-Ergie, Josef Hasler.

The city of Nuremberg has organized 1,100 hotel rooms into which those affected can move for a reduced price.

Mayor Marcus König (CSU) emphasized that people who would now move from the area to relatives would not violate the Corona requirements.

In addition to households, large companies, a clinic, schools, a shopping center and two old people's and nursing homes are also affected.

Heating devices should help

The energy supplier is currently trying to organize huge mobile heating devices nationwide that can feed energy into the grid.

At the moment it is still unclear whether the supply gap can be covered, said Hasler.

“At the moment we're on the right track.” The extreme cold, which is predicted for the next few days with minus degrees in the double-digit range, is causing concern.

The cause of the fire in the power plant early Monday evening was still unclear on Tuesday.

According to the fire brigade, the fire had broken out in the boiler house of power plant unit I and had spread to a height of 80 meters.

According to Hasler, the power plant will be out of operation for at least the next two weeks.

The German Weather Service predicts nighttime lows down to minus 13 degrees for the coming days.

Fire investigators from the criminal police are supposed to look for the cause of the fire in the next day.

"That will be tomorrow at the earliest," said a police spokesman.

Before this, all embers must be extinguished and the building must have cooled down.
