  • The metropolitan office will vote on a deliberation on Wednesday to award a further two million euros in subsidies each year for three years to the Grand Prix du Castellet, the French Formula 1 Grand Prix.

  • The environmental group of the metropolis denounces this decision from an economic and environmental point of view but also the way in which it is taken.

"We are not against helping a sports race, we are against the amount of this budget allocated and the way it will be", summarizes Juliette Chesnel-Le Roux, president of the environmental group at the Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolis .

Wednesday, during the metropolitan office, a deliberation will be voted to pay two million subsidies per year for three years at the Grand Prix du Castellet, in the Var.

“Generally, in a metropolitan office, it is day-to-day business that will be discussed.

Instead of 132 representatives who sit on the council, only about fifty mayors, the most important and only two or three people from the opposition.

It is therefore a decision taken in secret, without debate by the assembly, ”exclaims the president of the environmental group.

"It is also an ecological problem"

In addition to the economic aspect, the environmental group also insists on "the ecological scandal" that the event carries in itself.

Juliette Chesnel-Le Roux explains: “Today, we have a mayor who claims to be ecological but who will contribute to a sporting race of cars, which pollute a lot, 170 km from Nice.

Visitors will land at the airport and take their car to access it.

It would be more judicious to use the taxpayers' money of the Metropolis for sustainable tourism events, within this one and to make our territory live in a healthier way ”.

The Metropolis has already been paying for three years, two million euros in subsidies each year, specifies the representative of the group.

"Twelve million will in any case be devoted to this event while we are experiencing an ecological disaster and that we could use them for local projects, there are things to do!"

», She indicates.
