It is one of the symbols of 2020. The homemade mask, with the means at hand, in a few scissors, with or without a sewing machine, when no medical mask was available.

With time, the approved masks arrived but the fold was taken, tinged with fashion and fantasy.

Handmade masks have become the essential daily accessory for going to work or shopping.

From the most sober to the most colorful, there was something for everyone.

Except with the appearance of the Covid-19 variants, new recommendations have emerged.

From now on, the government asks "not to use any more of artisanal mask".

Since mid-January, they have been deemed insufficiently filtering in the face of the appearance of new, more contagious variants of the coronavirus.

"The HCSP (High Council of Public Health) recommends to the French, and this is the recommendation that I also make them, to no longer use the homemade mask that we made at home", declared Olivier Véran, Thursday 21 January on TF1.

In the meantime, Germany and Austria have imposed medical masks (surgical or FFP2) in shops and transport.

In France, since Monday February 8, all students from primary to high school must wear a category 1 approved mask. It is not yet known whether this practice will really spread outside school spaces.
