ViaCom CBS is launching on Monday in France PlutoTV, a new free streaming platform whose distribution model is neither that of conventional television, nor that of its competitors Netflix, Amazon and Salto.

Olivier Jollet, director general streaming and mobile Europe of ViacomCBS, specifies this operation in "Culture Médias", Monday.

INTERVIEW

Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, but also Molotov, Mango, Salto ... and now PlutoTV.

The streaming sector is enriched on Monday by a new player, with the arrival in France of PlutoTV.

This streaming service is already present in the United States and elsewhere in Europe.

Completely free, it is also distinguished by its operation.

ViacomCBS streaming and mobile Europe general manager Olivier Jollet explains in

Culture Médias

on

Monday

This free streaming service is accessible in the same way as its competitors.

"The service is available on the web, on pluto.tv, on mobile with an application, and on large-screen devices connected with AndroidTV, AmazonFireTV, AppleTV and Chromecast", explains Olivier Jollet.

A hybrid model between Netflix and television

But its content and mode of consumption are totally different.

In France, PlutoTV is a sort of TV universe with 40 thematic channels, all created specifically by the streaming service teams.

Fans of American comedies, documentaries or sports will therefore have access to a channel that broadcasts content that suits their tastes 24 hours a day.

Among these 40 channels, we will find a channel dedicated to poker, and another dedicated to video games news.

But also cult series from previous decades, such as

Jackass

,

Catfish

and

Pimp my ride

.

Not to mention a channel which will only broadcast episodes of

Women of the Law

and another only

Plus belle la vie

The same goes for

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

and

SpongeBob SquarePants

"The consumer does not always know what he wants to watch. Sometimes, too much choice kills the choice", explains Olivier Jollet about the dominant model of streaming.

"But, on classic TV, if you want to watch a comedy or poker, this is not necessarily the right time."

PlutoTV is therefore betting on this hybrid model, financed solely by advertising.

The rebroadcasting of soft toys

PlutoTV therefore relies on a streaming model, rather than video on demand.

"The platform has a replay function", reassures Olivier Jollet.

"But the concept of PlutoTV is really about 'lean back', the idea of sitting back and watching the content."

According to him, users want to watch series they know and love again, without necessarily following the plot from start to finish.

This offer therefore complements the existing streaming offer, rather than competing directly with it.

"If the user is looking for original content and new series, PlutoTV may not be the platform to go to", concedes Olivier Jollet.

For him, the real plus of PlutoTV is on the contrary to offer programs known and appreciated by the French, soft programs, "which are very difficult to find today on streaming and video on demand platforms."
