  • Some 3,500 nursing staff out of the 8,500 at Bordeaux University Hospital have already been vaccinated in recent weeks.

  • The arrival of the AstraZeneca vaccine will make it possible to vaccinate all personnel under the age of 65.

  • About 250 vaccinations per day with this new vaccine are scheduled at the Haut-Lévêque center in Pessac.

Barely arrived, already injected.

After receiving its first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine on Saturday, the Bordeaux University Hospital started the vaccination campaign on Sunday.

About fifty healthcare workers presented themselves to the vaccination center of the Haut-Lévêque hospital, in Pessac, in the suburbs of Bordeaux.

Knowing that the CHU has a total of three sites.

Some 3,500 nursing staff, out of the 8,500 in the CHU in total, have already been vaccinated in recent weeks with the Pfizer vaccine.

But these were only people over 50.

"With the AstraZeneca vaccine, we are opening up to those under 65, which will allow young caregivers who were on the waiting list to be vaccinated, and in fact, we see them arriving," explains Sophie Zamaron, the director. - Assistant of the Bordeaux University Hospital.

However, we favor our so-called first-line services, that is to say those which receive a lot of Covid-19: emergencies, resuscitation, infectious disease services, will be among the first to be vaccinated.

"

"We will have less to fear than before, when entering a room"

Supervised by members of the Civil Protection, the vaccination campaign is regulated like music paper.

A few questions are asked before receiving the injection, and the vaccinated persons remain under observation for a quarter of an hour afterwards.

But no difficulty was noted this Sunday morning.

Laure, nurse in Haut-Lévêque, is one of the very first to be vaccinated with AstraZeneca this Sunday.

“We were warned this morning, we were telephoned to tell us that we could come down from our internal medicine department in Haut-Lévêque to be vaccinated, we all came.

The doctors in our department recommended that we do it and I am in favor of vaccination.

It will be more reassuring to work vaccinated, even if you still have to wait for the second dose.

We will have less to fear than before, when we enter a room.

"The big advantage of AstraZeneca is that there is no preparation"

After this somewhat unexpected start, the campaign will begin to really organize itself from Monday.

"We schedule around 250 vaccinations per day, starting Monday, on this Haut-Lévêque site," explains Dr Marianne Lafitte, cardiologist at the Bordeaux University Hospital, and in charge of the Haut-Lévêque vaccination center.

We already have 210 long-standing appointments, to which we add at least 50 people, so we are ready to increase to 270 people.

Our added value here is reactivity, as soon as the doses arrive we can vaccinate overnight.

Besides its conservation, “the big advantage of AstraZeneca is that there is no preparation, it saves a lot of time, continues Loïc Eoche, health executive.

The ten doses are taken directly from the vial, and immediately injected as and when.

While for the Pfizer there is a need to dilute with physiological serum, mix according to a certain procedure, prepare the syringes and put them aside.

And this dilution takes time.

"

“It is more practical, it's true, confirms Dr Marianne Lafitte, which means that distribution throughout France will be facilitated, and that people - not just caregivers - will have access to it quickly.

Along with messenger RNA vaccines, this offers an increasingly comprehensive range of available vaccines, which represents great hope.
