  • Snow should fall in abundance on Tuesday over the whole of Brittany.

  • Forecasters expect three to five centimeters, even ten centimeters locally.

  • The prefecture of the West Defense Zone could take measures on Monday to limit the movement of heavy goods vehicles.

It is not expected before Tuesday, in the day but it already seems to animate the discussions.

In recent days, we have been whispering that it should make a remarkable comeback in Brittany.

Who is that ?

Snow, of course!

While a cold snap is announced for Tuesday across the whole of France, the Breton peninsula could be the first to wear a white coat.

“We are expecting a mass of cold air from Siberia which will encounter a disturbance which will rise from the Bay of Biscay with milder air and precipitation.

On the Atlantic coast, it could be rain but inland, there will be snow, that's for sure, ”says Steven Tual, forecaster at Météo Bretagne.

Expected during the day, this snowfall could even be substantial, according to the regional weather site.

“The episode will be quite notable and it should be generalized.

We expect 2 to 5 centimeters, even 10 centimeters locally, ”continues the forecaster.

The question everyone is asking is where is this snow going to fall.

A priori everywhere.

The north of the Rennes basin, the sectors of Combourg, Fougères and the usual Kreiz Breizh (central Brittany) should be the best served, although this remains to be confirmed.

Negative temperatures expected

According to Météo Bretagne, we have to go back to 2013 to find traces of such a marked episode.

The arrival of a very cold phenomenon could also allow the snow to hold on to the ground, perhaps even for several days, which is rare in the region.

"We can expect a phenomenon of nocturnal radiation where snow-covered ground contributes to a drop in temperatures," warns the forecaster.

The white of the snow "reflects" more heat than the dark masses.

Temperatures that can drop to -10 degrees could thus be recorded.

If Brittany will be the first to benefit from it, the flakes should also fall in abundance in the bordering departments.

"This will have to be confirmed on Monday but we are expecting 3 to 5 centimeters in Mayenne, or even 7 to 8 centimeters locally," explains Patrick Casteiltort, forecaster at Météo-France.

The neighboring Loire-Atlantique will be suspended from the thermometer to know its fate.

A mixture of rain and snow is expected Tuesday afternoon, which could cause an episode of ice.

The coming phenomenon is taken very seriously by the authorities.

Météo-France has thus decided to launch an early warning on Sunday, which will have to be confirmed on Monday.

Contacted, the prefecture of the Western defense zone explains "wait to know the extent and location of snowfall" before making decisions.

If the risk of snow-covered roads is confirmed, detours could be put in place for heavy goods vehicles with a strong incentive to postpone trips.
