In the first weeks of the pandemic, when hospitals were on the verge of collapse and the numbers of those affected were almost an avalanche, a small group of researchers from the Gregorio Marañón University Hospital in Madrid had enough coldness to stop and think about the future.

"We have to save as many virus samples as we can," they asked themselves, starting a race against time to recover, freeze, archive, and begin to sequence as much evidence as possible.
