, released in 1978. A few weeks ago, the cult film was rebroadcast on the Australian BBC and caused controversy among some Internet users.

On social networks, viewers accused the feature film of sexism and homophobia.

The most vocal of them even called for it to be banned from television screens.

, Olivia Newton-John reacted to these accusations.

"This movie was shot in the 1970s and it was about the 1950s," said the actress.

It's a play, it's a musical, it's fun.

It's a fun musical film that shouldn't be taken seriously.

The end of the film is notably one of the sequences considered sexist by the Australian public.

To please Danny (played by John Travolta), the character of Sandy totally changes her appearance, going from a teenage headband to leather pants.

“I think we need to relax a bit and just enjoy things for what they are.

I haven't seen it like that at all, I think it's a fun movie that keeps people entertained, ”Olivia Newton-John concluded.

At the end of 2019, WarnerMedia Entertainment revealed they were preparing a series inspired by the universe of the feature film called

Grease: Rydell High

.

The program is expected to repeat characters and songs seen and heard in the original film.
