    The ten most impressive national parks in Europe

The

Sierra de las Nieves,

refuge in the province of Málaga del pinsapo, is in the last phase to be recognized as a

National Park,

a brand that will provide the area and the 14 municipalities that comprise it with an impulse to consolidate this environmental jewel as a tourist destination and stop the depopulation it suffers.

Since the beginning of the

20th century,

the town councils of the area have been fundamental in the enhancement of this place, especially since its declaration as a Natural Park in 1989. Since then, the environmental wealth that this enclave enjoys, located in the region of the

Serranía de Ronda,

has earned it to be declared a

Biosphere Reserve

in 1995, in addition to being designated ZEC (Special Conservation Area) within the framework of the Natura 2000 Network.

The Sierra de las Nieves has

23,000 hectares

included between the municipalities of Benahavis, El Burgo, Istán, Monda, Parauta, Ronda, Tolox and Yunquera.

Its natural space is home to 65 percent of the Spanish fir surface, and includes two types of fir, Spanish fir

and white

, unique in the Iberian Peninsula and in danger of extinction.

MICROCLIMATES AND DIVERSITY OF HABITATS

In addition, it stands out for its outcrops of

peridotites

- ultra-basic rocks that constitute one of the rarest in the earth's crust -, for being the scene of large rock formations and for its

karst landscapes,

with numerous chasms.

But this area offers much more.

The variety of enclaves and the multitude of microclimates present, translate into a wide diversity of habitats that allow to host around 150 species of birds and a rich terrestrial fauna.

Specimens of Spanish fir, a unique species from the Sierra de las Nieves.

Among the species that inhabit the golden eagle, the Bonelli's eagle, the peregrine falcon or the real owl stand out;

without forgetting that in its rivers and streams a good representation of

autochthonous

crab

can still be found

;

in addition to large mammals such as the

mountain goat and roe deer.

Becoming a national park will bring a series of benefits, mainly aimed at conserving its natural values and landscapes.

Therefore, the Sierra de las Nieves will be in the spotlight at the tourist level - where

green tourism

is advocated

- and together with it, the municipalities that make it up, which it hopes will also be translated into a revulsive for the fight against

rural depopulation

suffered by some localities in the area.

THIRD ANDALUSIAN NATIONAL PARK AND SIXTEENTH SPANISH

Once the pending procedures have been approved,

Andalusia

will have

three national parks:

Doñana, Sierra Nevada and Sierra de las Nieves.

The latter will be included in the Spanish network as the sixteenth.

The management of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park will correspond to the Junta de Andalucía, which will organize it in a way that is consistent with the objectives of the Network of National Parks, currently made up of the Teide, Timanfaya, Garajonay and Caldera national parks. from Taburiente (Canary Islands);

Archipelago of Cabrera (Balearic Islands);

Ordesa and Monte Perdido (Aragon);

Aigüestortes and Lake of San Mauricio (Catalonia), Picos de Europa (Asturias - Cantabria - Castilla y León);

Cabañeros, Tablas de Daimiel (both in Castilla-La Mancha);
