Gas consumption fell last year in France, due to the mild weather and to a lesser extent the health crisis, according to the report of the operator of the GRTgaz gas network published on Thursday.
"In 2020, gas consumption in France is down 7% compared to 2019, marked by the effect of an exceptionally mild climate, 2020 having been the hottest year ever recorded in France since 1900", indicates GRTgaz in a press release.
Renewable boom
The health situation linked to the Covid-19 pandemic "ultimately had a more limited impact than the climate" on French consumption - with the exception of that of industry, more affected by the crisis.
The demand for electricity was also affected in this context.
Gross French consumption thus reached 449 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2020, down 5% compared to 2019, according to figures from the RTE network manager communicated to AFP.
GRTgaz, which operates the majority of the gas transmission network in France (with the exception of a small southwest quarter), also notes a boom in renewable gases.
"Anaerobic digestion confirms its strong development with 214 sites injecting into the gas networks as of December 31, 2020 (+ 74% compared to 2019) for a total production capacity of 3.9 TWh (+ 75%)", notes the subsidiary of 'Engie.
