Towards the recession… After reaching 3.31 m on Monday evening shortly before midnight, the flow of La Maronne, a tributary of the Dordogne, was slowing down on Tuesday morning.

The situation was "stabilized" in Argentat-sur-Dordogne (Corrèze) where dozens of inhabitants had been evacuated preventively on Monday evening.

The red vigilance to floods has also been lifted for Corrèze.

In total, 19 departments are on orange vigilance for floods in a large southwestern quarter of the country as well as in the far north.

73 people sheltered

While the usual level of La Maronne is 1.40 m, it stabilized on Tuesday at 3.15 m.

That is to say at levels approaching the historic floods of 1944 (3.80 m), 1907 (3.55 m) and 1990 (3.05 m), according to the Vigicrues site.

During the night, a "preventive" operation was organized in Argentat-sur-Dordogne to evacuate a risk area of 150 inhabitants directly threatened by the rising waters, in this town of 3,000 inhabitants 30 km from Tulle where 52 firefighters and 23 gendarmes had been mobilized.

In the end, 73 people present were sheltered, with among them 20 who were relocated in the municipal village hall for the night.

"The inhabitants are used to flooding, they were very calm," assured the prefect.

"A dozen houses were impacted," detailed the prefecture, specifying that any damage should be assessed in the morning.

"Opening the valves to let the natural flow" of water pass

The department had been placed in red vigilance Monday evening after the heavy rains of the last few days and an "opening of the sluices" on a dam carried out Monday afternoon upstream from the town, due to an "overflow", according to the prefect.

The maneuver carried out by EDF consisted of "opening the valves to allow the natural flow" of water to pass through, the prefecture specified, referring to a "safety" operation for the work.
