Six weeks after the start of the vaccination campaign in Israel, around three million people in the country have already received the first vaccination against the coronavirus.

That's about a third of the population.

Around 1.7 million Israelis have already been vaccinated twice, the Ministry of Health announced on Saturday.

At the same time, the number of infections in the small Mediterranean country remained high.

6435 new cases were reported to have been recorded within 24 hours.

Israel has a little more than nine million inhabitants, around nine times as many people live in Germany.

For comparison: The German health authorities reported 12,321 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute within one day.

In Germany around 1.8 million people received a first vaccination and more than 460,000 a second vaccination.

The number of infections in Israel is particularly high in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish and Arab populations.

A lockdown has been in place in the country for three weeks, but there are always violations.

The measures could be lifted because of a dispute between the right-wing conservative Likud of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the blue-white center alliance of Defense Minister Benny Gantz.

Gantz is calling for penalties for violations to be tightened as a condition for an extension.

In view of the high number of infections, the Ministry of Health is pressing for an extension of the measures, which expire on Monday night.

The closings of Ben Gurion International Airport and the national borders are only scheduled until the end of January.

A decision on how to proceed is expected on Sunday.

The coalition of Likud, Blau-Weiß and smaller partners broke down at the end of last year due to a budget dispute.

A new election is due on March 23.
