Winegrowers demonstrated on Wednesday in Rivesaltes (Pyrénées-Orientales), to protest against the project to build a new prison, in this town located near Perpignan.

"It risks damaging the image of our brands, the Rivesaltes appellation, the Muscat de Rivesaltes", says Brice Cassagnes, president of the cooperative cellar of the small town, in the immediate vicinity of the future second prison of the department. .

It could accommodate 500 inmates

In addition to the hundred or so winegrowers, about twenty tractors were also present on Wednesday, at the beginning of the afternoon, in this gathering in front of the town hall, where a permanence was held as part of the public inquiry around this project. of the Ministry of Justice.

This new prison could accommodate 500 prisoners in an activity zone located near the A9 motorway.

"We have a conflict of use since the prison, with its 14 hectares of land, will deprive us of several paths used today, in particular to bring in the harvest", continues the winegrower.

Brice Cassagnes also fears the importation of a "certain insecurity" with "a population that comes prowling to send messages to inmates, as is practiced in Perpignan prison".
