[Explanation] On January 20, the new US President Biden officially took office.

How will the new US government deal with issues concerning China?

What is the future trend of Sino-US relations?

The international community pays great attention to this.

[Commentary] On January 26, the "Hong Kong-China Forum-Current Sino-US Relations: Direction and Path" video seminar was held, and the guests discussed the prospects of Sino-US relations.

At the meeting, Zeng Peiyan, director of the China International Economic Exchange Center, said that in recent years, Sino-US relations have fallen into unprecedented difficulties.

He hopes that the new US government will meet China halfway, restart and improve the multi-level exchange mechanism between China and the United States, and accumulate mutual trust.

China and the United States should promptly resume the strategic dialogue between the top leaders of the two countries and play a leading role in the development of bilateral relations.

Make use of the various dialogue mechanisms established before, and on the basis of equality and mutual respect, use dialogue and consultation as a basic channel to solve problems and bridge differences.

The two sides should actively carry out dialogues between non-governmental organizations, enterprises, and think tanks, as well as exchanges in the fields of education, science and technology, and culture, so as to enhance mutual understanding and friendly feelings between the two peoples and improve the public opinion foundation of bilateral relations.

[Explanation] Zeng Peiyan said that China-US economic and trade relations have always been the ballast and stabilizer of bilateral relations, and their essence is cooperation and win-win.

He suggested that China and the United States should conduct a new round of economic and trade negotiations on the basis of a comprehensive and objective assessment of the first-phase economic and trade agreement between China and the United States, so as to push the economic and trade relations between the two countries back on track.

Not long ago, China signed the RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) with 14 other Asia-Pacific countries, and completed the China-EU Investment Agreement negotiations with the European Union, and expressed active consideration of joining the CPTPP (Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement).

I think this fully demonstrates China's determination to implement structural reforms and institutional opening up.

China and the United States should uphold an active and cooperative attitude, conduct a new round of economic and trade negotiations on the basis of a comprehensive and objective assessment of the first-stage economic and trade agreement, and eliminate the high tariffs imposed on each other since the trade war as soon as possible, and remove unreasonable investment restrictions. We will promptly restart the BIT (Sino-US Investment Agreement) negotiations to push China-US economic and trade relations back on track.

[Commentary] On the same day, Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, delivered a video speech.

She said that Hong Kong and the United States have achieved long-term success in commerce, trade and finance, and they are a valuable business bridge between China and the United States.

It is hoped that Sino-US relations will be improved to provide impetus to the recovery of the global economy.

[Commentary] Former Canadian Prime Minister Chretien, former Italian Prime Minister and former President of the European Commission Prodi, former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gutierrez, former U.S. Trade Representative Hills, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Dong Jianhua, chairman of the China-US Exchange Foundation, attended the meeting and delivered speeches.
