Like the Paris Agreement concluded in 2015 for the climate, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, called on Tuesday before the World Economic Forum in Davos for an international pact to preserve biodiversity.

“We have talked a lot about the links between biodiversity loss and Covid.

We must now take action, ”she said.

European legislation to fight deforestation

"If we do not act urgently to protect our nature, the next pandemic will be around the corner", she added, calling for "a" Paris Agreement "for biodiversity".

The COP15 on biodiversity, which will be held this year in Kunming, China, should be "as the COP21 was for the climate", with "the same ambition at the global level", she insisted.

Ursula von der Leyen also announced that her Commission would propose "legislation to ensure that the EU market does not lead to deforestation halfway around the world".

It will also present “a legal framework for the restoration of healthy ecosystems”.

"If temperatures continue to rise and nature continues to disappear, we will see more natural disasters and diseases," continued the German leader.

“When we lose forests, we don't just lose green space or natural habitat.

We are losing a key ally in our fight against climate change, ”she said.
