  • Winter holidays begin on February 20 for the people of Nice, but on the 5th for some of the French.

  • The prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes has still not commented on the application of a ban on seasonal rentals.

  • The president of the National Union for the promotion of vacation rentals, Timothée de Roux, denounces the injustice of such a measure.

The announcement on social networks had made noise.

On January 13, Christian Estrosi declared that he wanted to ban seasonal rentals in Nice during the winter holidays in order to put in place “reinforced protection measures on travel, a factor of contamination”.

Almost two weeks later, no action has been taken officially and professionals in the sector are concerned.

“We sent a letter to the town hall of Nice and the Ministry of Tourism.

At the moment, we still have no answer while the holidays start in two weeks, ”exclaims Timothée de Roux, president of the National Union for the Promotion of Holiday Rental (UNPLV), which represents 80% of the players who do seasonal rentals such as Airbnb or Abritel, of which he is the general manager.

Furnished seasonal rentals, the first type of holiday accommodation

"I do not understand why we want to close an accommodation sector", wonders the president of the UNPLV.

“From the start of the crisis, we implemented a strict health protocol which was validated by the government.

The furnished seasonal rental represents less traffic risk than hotels for example ”.

Timothée de Roux complains above all about a lack of consultation with the players in this branch when, "during the summer season, we largely contributed to compensate for the consequent losses in the general economy".

For him, “as long as tourists are allowed to go on vacation”, “a balanced strategy” is needed.

"How many workers are going to be left behind?

"

Rental companies yes, but service providers linked to the sector will also be affected by this measure.

Julien Reynaud, of C and J conciergerie, works with more than 50 rental apartments, for cleaning, for check-in and check-out and key collection.

He has been doing this activity for over ten years.

“All the apartments I work with are empty.

Usually, the month of February allows us to balance our accounts so that in April or May we start making money.

Our season ends in October and we have four months without money.

So there, it starts to be complicated.

The longer it lasts, the more difficult it will be to get up ”.

According to him, the year 2021 would also be a year 0. “We are this kind of company that only works thanks to tourists, so without them, we wonder how we will hold out.

In addition, we are very careful with the sanitary rules.

My cleaning team disinfects everything, cleans and uses the key boxes to be a contactless service.

She does this while being masked and in coveralls.

I would be remiss all my life if, because of a rental, an employee caught the Covid-19 ”.

He concludes on the subject of the announcement of the mayor of Nice: “We cannot kill a part of the economy in this way, especially when it allows to operate an ecosystem as a whole.

I am not a scientist, but how many workers will be left behind?

It will be as dangerous as the hundreds of deaths every day.

We at least ask that tourists from the departments can come and that we can work a little ”.
