Setback in the development of a new corona vaccine: The US pharmaceutical company Merck and the French Pasteur Institute are giving up their research on a jointly developed vaccine, as both sides announced in New York and Paris.

The Pasteur Institute explained that the first tests had shown insufficient effectiveness against the coronavirus.

According to the Pasteur Institute, the immune responses in the joint vaccine project were "weaker than those in naturally recovered corona patients and in vaccines that have already been approved".

The remedy was to be developed on the basis of a vaccine against measles.

Merck's pharmaceutical laboratory in the USA said it was also terminating its own research project due to insufficient effectiveness.

SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach cannot gain anything from the current debate about privileges for people who have already been vaccinated against Covid-19.

At this point in time it has "no point," he said.

There is a lack of broad access to the vaccine as well as scientific data on a possible persistent risk of infection for vaccinated people.

It is uncertain whether vaccinated people will continue to spread the corona virus.

“At the moment the data is completely missing,” Lauterbach said on Monday in the ZDF “Morgenmagazin”.
