The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature will kick off this weekend with a series of literary events characterized by an aesthetic artistic character at the Jameel Arts Center in Al Jaddaf in Dubai from the 29th to the 30th of March.

The festival program - which comes under the slogan '' Let's change the story '', to express the spirit of the current period - features a range of live performances, art tours, workshops, exhibitions and children's activities, along with many free sessions.

The activities come on the first weekends over a period of three weeks. The major festival events will be held at the second weekend at the "InterContinental Dubai Festival City" from the fourth to the sixth of next February, and the activities of the third weekend will be organized on the "Alserkal Avenue" during the period. From 12 to 13 February next.

Festival activities begin at the Jameel Arts Center with a program that includes a group of well-known new authors, poets and designers in numerous sessions presented in both Arabic and English.

Artistic dialogues

The program includes a series of technical talks hosted by Chomon Basar, through the exhibition "Time of Self", which he participated in coordinating and supervising.

Meanwhile, the librarian and book collector, David Hirsch, will present a discussion through the "Library Episodes" exhibition, which displays a collection of magazine publications, books, Arabic graphic novels and manga experiences dating back to 1956 to the present day.

The Jameel Arts Center organizes art tours in both Arabic and English that last throughout the weekend, and visitors can register via the Jameel Arts Center website.

2020 Poker-nominated novelist Avni Duchy looks at the effects of the success of her first novel, Burned Sugar, on the stage of the Jameel Arts Center.

Shahd Al-Rawi returns after the success of her novel "The Baghdad Hour" with her new book "Over the Republic Bridge", which narrates a true love story for three generations in Baghdad. The story includes a bouquet of feelings and feelings loaded with hope, nostalgia, love and friendship.

Among the names announced for her participation is the artist Irma Boom, who has been described as "the Queen of Books". Boom's bold experimental approach to the completion of more than 300 books has led to her becoming the youngest winner of the "Gutenberg Prize", and owns a selection of her books preserved in The permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Boom will share her life and professional experience with Sheikh Salem bin Faisal Al Qasimi, founder of Fikra Design Studio.

Workshops

The children's workshops include a session for those between the ages of six and eight with Emirati writer and illustrator Maitha Al-Khayyat, and a workshop on art and awareness with Stephanie Robert and Jojo Chappelle.

There is also a workshop dedicated to combining poetic expression and art with poet Danabelle Guterres, who will demonstrate how to compose a poem based on a piece of art exhibited in the Jameel Art Center Gallery.

The artist and writer Themar Halawani talks about the story and fame of the silent books.

Whereas, writers who face problems starting or continuing to write their literary works will benefit from the "Troubleshooting and Correcting Fiction" workshop with Annabelle Kantaria.

Social activist and fashion specialist, Hafsa Lodi, author of "Modesty and the Fashion Dilemma", will present a workshop on how to create a digital business plan that makes the impact of ideas last.

Next Saturday evening witnesses poetic inspiration with some of the best artists in Dubai, most notably the Jara group with Shama Al Bastaki, Sarah Al Muhairi and Arthur De Oliveira.

And a discussion of the importance of small collections of poetry;

The session includes independent publishers from the Jara Group, and is moderated by Saira Ansari, of the Sharjah Art Foundation.

Influential personalities

The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature continues with the festival’s activities at the end of the second week at the headquarters of the festival «InterContinental Dubai Festival City» (4-6 next February), and at «Alserkal Avenue» (12-13 February).

With a number of influential personalities, most notably Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Prize winner, Elif Shafak, Amin Maalouf, and Uyinkan Braithwaite.

"Al Serkal Avenue" also welcomes the Egyptian writer Ahmed Mourad, and holds a closing ceremony with the performance poets Yaman Sisay, Afra Atiq, and the award-winning Palestinian actress and writer Dana Dajani.

The spirit of the current period

Many of the sessions are inspired by the theme of the 2021 festival: “Let's change the story,” which expresses the spirit of the current period.

The program offers family fun, enriching and enjoyable discussions, inspiring ideas and interactive presentations, focusing on books, art, science, contemporary affairs, film screenings, and gastronomy.

In the framework of adherence to the procedures and measures of social distancing, a limited number of tickets will be offered for each session, so we recommend early booking to guarantee seats.

And remember that attendance requires obtaining tickets even for free sessions, so that we can determine the number of visitors.
