France Télévisions puts online on Sunday, on its digital channel Francetv Slash, the documentary "Queendom, 3 drag stories".

He follows three drag-queen artists, Shigo LaDurée, Le Filip and Cookie Kunty, well known in the queer scene in Paris.

The co-directors, Marco Novoa and Simon Vivier tell about their documentary in "Culture Médias", Friday.

This is a documentary on drag queens far removed from the successful reality show

Rupaul's drag race

that Francetv Slash will air on Sunday.

It is called

Queendom, 3 drag stories

and follows three Parisian drag-queens artists: Le Filip, Shigo LaDurée and Cookie Kunty. Three well-known emblematic figures of queer nights in the capital. Interviewed on Friday by

Culture Médias

, the two co-directors , Marco Novoa and Simon Vivier explain having chosen these artists as a starting point to avoid falling into a too classic format.

"What was important for us was not to make a very explanatory, very educational or long-awaited documentary on the history of drag. Doing 'Drag for Dummies' did not interest us," warns Marco Novoa.

"What interested us was to follow three characters who were in the French drag scene. We wanted to introduce this scene through them."

Covid-19 in the glitter

Beyond the appearances of spectacle and glitter, the directors wanted to explore the political dimension of drag.

"We wanted to show what it's like to drag today in France: what we give up, what we expose ourselves to", explains Simon Vivier.

Queendom

is a documentary with a very careful aesthetic.

There again, the two co-directors tried to move away from the traditional codes of reporting on this subject.

But the documentary has also evolved, because of the Covid-19.

"The pandemic was also an opportunity to talk about precariousness", explains Marco Novoa.

"These artists evolve without social coverage, without unemployment and without special status".

The documentary therefore shows how drag queens, for whom this is almost never the only profession in France, manage to bring their passion to life, at a time when no show or evening entertainment is possible.
