The recent suicide attempts of two students in the Lyon area prompted them to come out of their torpor.

This Thursday noon, many young people are expected in the streets of the city at the call of the inter-union student to demonstrate their refusal "to be the sacrificed generation of the current crisis".

"Faced with the urgency of student insecurity, indifference and inaction are no longer tolerable", indicate the student organizations and collectives at the initiative of the demonstration, anxious to mobilize for "decent living conditions in the face of the urgency of student distress ”.

Desperate acts that illustrate the plight of young people

On January 9, a law student tried to end his life in Villeurbanne, throwing himself from the fourth floor of his university residence.

A few days later, a young girl had also wanted to break out of the window, but had been saved at the last minute by other students who had prevented her from jumping into the void.

These desperate acts, the echo of which extended far beyond the Lyon metropolitan area, aroused great emotion among students and universities and helped to untie languages on the living conditions of young people, which have deteriorated since the beginning of the year. the pandemic.

In recent days, many of them have spoken to testify to their distress, their precariousness and their loneliness after months of confinement, to be deprived of courses at the university.

Among their demands, the students expect real measures from the government to help them "in the face of problems of insecurity and mental health", underline the intersyndicale.

Months after the closure of the campuses and the keeping at a distance from the majority of them, they plead in particular for a reopening of teaching places for those who need it and for better educational support.

The inter-union also hopes for a significant increase in the number of scholarship holders and the development of psychological support systems.

Beyond Lyon, where we meet at noon at the Manufacture des Tabacs (3rd), mobilisations are also planned in Saint-Etienne and Grenoble.
