  • According to INSEE, Auvergne Rhône-Alpes is the region which has recorded the highest increase in excess mortality since the start of the second wave.

  • Rather spared last spring, the region deplored 8,500 additional deaths compared to 2019, an increase of 38%, against 16.3% nationally.

A second wave, longer and stronger, which was particularly marked in Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.

And more deadly.

According to INSEE, the region was the one that was most affected in France between September 1 and the end of December 2020 by the excess mortality observed in France since the start of the health crisis linked to Covid-19.

Over this period, 8,500 additional deaths were deplored compared to 2019, or 38% more, ahead of Bourgogne Franche-Comté (+ 25%) and Guadeloupe

(+ 23%).

During the first wave, the region was rather spared compared to other territories, such as the Grand-Est and Ile de France, with a 19% increase in deaths observed in March and April.

From September and the resurgence of the epidemic on the national territory, deaths started to rise again in the region, with a very marked excess mortality in November, during the epidemic peak of Covid-19.

"It was strongest during the weeks covering the period from November 2 to 22, with twice as many deaths recorded each week compared to 2019," said the statistics institute.

Nationally, this excess mortality was three times lower than in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes (16.3%) ”.

No excess mortality among those under 65

Unsurprisingly, the increase in this excess mortality is more marked among people over 65 (+ 44.3%).

“As in the first wave, it hardly affects people under 65.

During this second wave, the region recorded 3,350 deaths for people under the age of 65.

There were 3,300 in 2019 ”.

No department has escaped this upsurge in deaths, even if certain territories, such as Savoie (+ 58%), Loire (+ 49%) or even Haute-Loire (+ 59%) have been more heavily affected.

Cantal is an exception and was almost spared the second wave and excess mortality, according to INSEE.
