The universe of

Dragons and Dungeons

will continue to grow in the audiovisual with a film and a television series, both live action.

Derek Kolstad, creator and screenwriter of the

John Wick

film franchise

, will write and develop the television adaptation of the popular role-playing games, which will soon return to the big screen,

The Hollywood Reporter

reports

.

Between 2000 and 2012, three

Dungeons and Dragons

movies were released

.

Last December

Paramount and Hasbro, owner of the game, announced that Chris Pine would star in a new film

, which is currently in the casting phase.

Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will direct the film, which is scheduled for release in 2022.

Regarding the series,

Hasbro and its eOne studio have launched the television project

.

The idea is to create a new constellation of productions around the role-playing game, because in addition to the project led by Kolstad, eOne is working with other scriptwriters to develop other series.

This would be the first live action television series based on

Dragons and Dungeons

.

It would join the

mythical animated series of

the same name, broadcast by

CBS

between 1983 and 1985 and broadcast in Spain by Spanish Television.

In it, a group of children try to return home after being transported, through a multidimensional door, to the universe of

Dragons and dungeons

.

Created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson,

the

Dungeons and Dragons

game was

released in 1974

, gaining popularity in the 1980s. In a universe inhabited by humans, elves, orcs, and hundreds of fantastic creatures, the game is famous for their wars, treasure hunts and campaigns.

Originally derived from pen, paper, and dice board games,

Dungeons & Dragons

is considered the beginning of modern role-playing games and, consequently, massively multiplayer online role-playing games.

During the coronavirus pandemic, interest in the game has been renewed thanks to online games

through Twitch and YouTube.

So much so that Brian Goldner, CEO of Hasbro, said last October that

sales were up 20% compared to 2019

.
