For the time being, this is an experiment.

But if successful, the device could be extended to other schools in Lyon.

The town hall, in conjunction with the Rhône prefecture and the Lyon academy, has been experimenting with “solidarity breakfasts” since the start of the year.

These are offers to kindergarten children a first “balanced and quality” meal, from the local sector.

For the moment, only one establishment has been chosen, the Olympe de Gouges nursery school, located in the Mermoz-Pinel district (8th arrondissement of Lyon) and classified in the political zone of the City.

This concerns four classes, or 80 children.

Two days a week

Breakfasts are served between 8:20 am and 8:40 am in the school canteen.

They are provided by the social canteen "Epi c'est bon: social & solidarity canteen" two days a week: Tuesdays and Fridays.

“Today, France has three million poor children, or one in five.

Among them, some do not have access to fundamental rights in matters of housing, food and health, ”argues the town hall of Lyon, in a press release.

And to add: “Numerous studies indeed establish that children who do not eat breakfast in the morning have more difficulty in concentrating on learning.

This observation is reinforced by the health crisis which has led to a loss of employment or a fall in income for many households, especially in priority neighborhoods ”.

For this experiment, the City of Lyon purchases breakfasts at a price of 2.30 euros per unit.

This represents a total expenditure of 6,624 euros per year, she adds that families have nothing to take care of.
