Not the abandoned city of

The wonder of the world most valued by the Spanish is the

Northern Lights.

This is clear from a survey conducted by Lonely Planet on its social networks.

More than

114,000 travelers

have participated on this occasion in the macro-survey proposed by the publisher, which proposed choosing the most extraordinary wonder on the planet, both natural and man-made, from a list of 32 places and natural phenomena.

But what is an aurora borealis and

when and where

can they be observed?

It is the sun and its currents that cause them.

But there are plenty of ions and gases, ultimately scientific explanations, given the excitement of being able to contemplate such a live show.

Between the months of November and March, the northern lights dance in the sky of the

Arctic Circle

and further north, from Canada to Greenland, from Norway to Iceland, Finland or Sweden.

In that strip of the planet, up to 200 nights a night can happen with the northern lights.

The best time to observe them is about two hours before and after midnight, and the phenomenon can last from several hours to just a few seconds.

One of the best ways to go in search of the Northern Lights is by driving our own

dogsled,

either for a few hours or on a full multi-day safari.

Getting lost in a dark place with no population or light pollution is essential to observing the Northern Lights.

Ideally, locate potential locations while sightseeing in the morning and find a good place to return to when the sun goes down to wait for the magic to emerge.

In addition, the ideal is that it is a

moonless night.

When full, the light that it reflects can almost completely eat away the effect of the northern lights and make them very difficult to observe.

To photograph them, we will need a tripod, a reflex camera and a bright lens.
