After many years of controversy, consultations, expertise and discussions, the Minister of Ecological Transition Barbara Pompili has finally come to a decision.

In a press release on Monday, the ministry announced, as planned before the end of this month, the final containment of hazardous industrial waste from the Stocamine site.

Waste located under the important water table in Alsace.

A decision taken after a site visit by the Minister on January 5 and during which she had exchanged with elected officials, associations and citizens.

Local elected officials who nevertheless demanded the additional destocking of waste.

Several depolluted sites

In parallel with this decision, the Minister provides for a financial envelope of 50 million euros, under the guidance of the Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe), to enable a groundwater protection plan Alsace over the next five years.

Several former industrial sites located above the Alsace water table will thus be cleaned up (in particular the PCUK site in Wintzenheim where 750 tonnes of lindane are buried) in order to avoid its contamination by infiltration from the surface, which is the main source of groundwater pollution.
