A British study concluded that about a third of those recovering from the Corona virus return to hospitals again within five months of their recovery.

The study also stated that one out of every eight recovered from the virus dies due to complications related to the virus.

Researchers at the University of Leicester and the British Office for National Statistics found that out of 47,780 people who were discharged from the hospital during the first wave, 29.4% returned to the hospital within 140 days, and 12.3% died due to complications.

The researchers stated that the long-term devastating effects of infection with the Corona virus, could cause many of the recovered people to have heart problems, diabetes, and chronic diseases of the liver and kidneys.

The researcher based on the study, Kamlesh Khunti, professor of primary care for diabetes and vascular medicine at the University of Leicester, told the British Telegraph newspaper, that this is "the largest study of people who were discharged from hospitals after contracting the Coronavirus."

"It seems that the recovered people are returning home, suffering from the long-term effects of the virus, returning to hospital and dying," he added.

We saw about 30% of those recovering hospital returning to hospitals. This is a large percentage. ”

The study has not yet been subjected to review by similar research bodies, and these worrying statistics are based on preliminary data.

But Khunti said that he was surprised by the return of those recovering from the Corona virus to the hospital due to their various diseases, adding that many people had suffered more complications.

He explained, "We do not know whether the Corona virus destroyed the beta cells that produce insulin, so a person becomes infected with the first type of diabetes, or whether it causes insulin resistance, and the person becomes infected with the second type, but we see new sudden diagnoses of diabetes."

The British government is currently recording deaths as linked to the Coronavirus if the patient dies 28 days after testing positive for the virus.

But the real death toll may be much higher if thousands of people recovering from the virus return to hospital with serious health problems, months after they were infected with the Coronavirus.

Long-term illness

The Office for National Statistics said that one person in 10 of those who contracted the Coronavirus suffers from the long-term effects of the virus, with symptoms lasting three months or more.

Common symptoms include extreme tiredness, shortness of breath, and problems with memory and concentration.

Commenting on this study, Christina Bagel, Director of the Clinical Research Unit at the University of London, said in a tweet, “This is an important study, the Corona virus has ramifications greater than death.

There is a large burden of long-term disease after hospitalization due to HIV infection. ”
