*** SBS D Forum (SDF) is a knowledge sharing platform created by SBS for the purpose of social contribution.

We present the topics that our society needs to look at in depth, and look for insights from various angles.

In the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts are being made fiercely to find a methodology for how we should live together as members of a community in a different way than before.

Meanwhile, there is a growing movement to find solutions in novels and movies based on scientific imagination.

According to Aladdin's analysis, the science fiction market in the first half of 2020 compared to the first half of 2011 grew 5.5%, and the Kyobo Bookstore survey published at the end of last October also recorded the highest sales of Korean novels increased by 30.1% compared to the previous year. It was revealed that sales of novels increased by about 5.5 times.

Last week, SDF Diary

introduced several attempts to communicate differently than before by utilizing

the'Metaverse'

, a

space where reality and virtual are mixed

.

The concept of'metaverse', which is a compound word of the real world and transcendence, which is recently gaining interest among people in the IT industry, communication, and marketing. Actually

, science fiction (Science Fiction) written by

American writer

Neil Stevenson

in 1992

<

First appearance in

Snow Crash>

.

Then, what kind of science fiction content should we pay attention to while experiencing Corona 19?

On the

11th, we met

Park Sang

-

jun

, the first president of the Korea SF Association, who has been involved in planning, translation, and columnist activities in the SF field for the past 30 years

.

“As I have been looking for science fiction experts in a wide variety of fields in the last 5 years, I feel that the importance of science fiction is becoming increasingly important in the modern social culture. That is, many people have a little bit about the diverse spectrum of future society that is projected by SF. I think this is the reason why I want to know more and use it as an opportunity to reflect and reflect on reality in some way. I have lectured on science fiction at government agencies, government-funded research institutes, and schools at various levels. We often ask for opinions on how science fiction has portrayed the future outlook in various places, from 2030 to 2050 as far as it goes, on that scale.”

Q. How do you define SF?

"SF is a science fiction literally, so

it would be translated as'science

fiction',

but in Korea, it was said that it was a science fiction novel in the process of Japanese being passed. But in fact, the nuance of the word fantasy is a bit fuzzy, catching the cloud, something out of reality. Because of this negative nuance, it seems that there was one influence that had to slow down the perception of the genre of science fiction in Korea as a whole, such as publishing in Korea, and in the 20th century, when science and technology had a decisive influence on our human society. Until the first half of the century, some kind of science and technology versatility was the norm. I was hoping that science and technology would give us a rosy utopia, but in 1945, when the atomic bombs fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, doubts and anxiety about science and technology were also raised. However, the science fiction genre can be seen as a genre that brought doubts and anxiety about science and technology from before. In the

science and technology field, some dark parts that people didn't think about or hate to reveal in the form of storytelling gonna,

I hageodeunyo think so. technology is optimistic future outlook gives us is Joe talking all the time that politicians entrepreneurs and but SF writers that science and technology have a negative impact, as well as some positive impact on our human and social It shows in the form of a story whether it will go crazy, so it gives insight in the process.”

Q. What SF contents are emerging after the Corona 19 incident?

"Would the generations going through this era because of Corona 19 anyway have some sort of trauma left behind. In particular, the generations of children who go through the sensitive mental formation period during this period of growth may have lifelong physical distancing and some hygiene ideas? I'd think the social communication activities, the proportion of non-face-to-face approach would be larger. first, a very in geukdanhwa the works depicting the future society, physically distancing

of Isaac Asimov <naked sun>

are called content. in domestic

<naked sun>

In that work, everyone lives alone. The distance from neighbors is over 1km. So, face-to-face is a background of a future space colony in which people who are afraid of face-to-face without even thinking about it for life In this novel, humanoid humanoid robots that provide all the help needed to live alone are attached to each person in their 50s, so they support them without any hindrance to their daily lives. As a work, first of all, that work comes to mind.

After that, among ICT technologies, AI is the most talked about these days. Most recently, it is said that a 20-year-old female character created by a domestic company called'Achieved' has a lot of problems. There is

a novel called

<The Life Cycle of Software Objects> by

an

author named

Ted Chang

about how AI will really come into our reality and how it will be accepted in our reality, although it

has the same title as a dissertation, but the main character is an animal trainer. When I was offered a new job, I was commissioned to be in charge of an AI with a body and mentoring the socialization process for several years, and that work seems to contain a very realistic guide to how AI will be accepted in our society. .

There and beyond the ICT sector is already technically ready in only socially acceptable it can not yet widely spread now you

Another field that doesn't just do is biotechnology and genetic engineering.

In terms of genetic engineering, there is a film that has already been released, but there

is

a film called

Kataka (directed by Andrew Nicole)

.

It is a very good description of what our lives will look like when genetically tailored babies become commonplace.

One thing that surprised me recently was that <Kataka> was a 1997 movie, and in that movie, unmarried men and women went on a date and secretly took each other's hair roots attached to each other, and looked at the genetic compatibility after parting. We ran to the giver and asked what kind of gene we would be born with if we had two years old, and we listened to the analysis results on the spot.

However, I saw a YouTube advertisement that SKT recently started a health care service by analyzing genes with saliva.

I think I'll be seulseul felt one could again go up again a reality I just created an ad, like we talked about in the movie Gattaca danmak. "

Q. As we went through the corona is too Yusheng thought only human-centered and live far beyond the human future other organisms also makes dwaetneundeyo reflection of Laguna era to think you live like even. SF content of This is only other things more broadly discussed without cover human affairs?

"it is out of anthropocentrism indeyo another talk've done traditionally in SF .

To think about the environment, eco-friendliness, and ecology outside of anthropocentricism, we often use expressions such as'ecotopia' in a familiar language.

In fact

, the word

"Ecotopia"

is the title of a science fiction novel from the 70s.

It

was written by a person

named'Ernest Kalenbach'

.

In the early 70s, parts of California became independent from the United States under the name Ecotopia.

So, it is a novel written in the form of a reporter who is the main character visits the country and writes the contents of the society.

The sharing economy model that we use a lot now is already set by default in that society, and the rest of the time is just free activities for self-realization of oneself as long as the minimum amount of labor required to carry out basic food, clothing and shelter is required. It is being described as a guaranteed society.

Most science fiction novels often show a dystopian tendency to sharply criticize reality by depicting a negative situation at the extreme.

Although rare, there are some works that predict the future society of utopia, but the Ecotopia I mentioned, and before that, Berner

Frederick Skinner

, a master of behaviorist psychology, lauded

the title of David Sorrow's book The

Walden.

I wrote a novel called "

Two"

. Similar to Ecotopia, the sharing economy is basically set up, and after a minimum of labor, each person fully invests time in self-realization or pursuing their own happiness. I have it."

Q. Most of you mentioned overseas works.

Are there any domestic works that stand out recently?

"In the last two to three years, the work of domestic science fiction writers has been increasing a lot in the publishing market. In particular, among the issues that did not attract much attention in the past, there are a lot of issues that have recently surfaced as materials, for example. Since then, I know that works that interpret feminism, various socially disadvantaged people, including LGBTI people, and minorities in science fiction or accept science fiction, are receiving a lot of attention, and their readership is also very strong. As far as I know, women in their 40s are the largest readership I know.

Author Bo-young Kim's works have been translated from English to English and will be published this spring. The person who translated'Lee Seung's Prophet' told author Bo-young Kim " When asked, "What is your gender?", author Bo-young Kim said that he did not write it in the first place. But in English, it must always be He or She, so I guess the translator felt embarrassed. Some sex roles fixed and standardized in this way. "It's also becoming a little free in SF."

Recently SDF 2019 years' Hummingbird 'Kim Bo-ra filmmaker is a sequel of the former representative speakers

authors SF soseoljip

' we're not to go at the speed of light,

called a "spectrum" contained in (last October, based on 17 million copies sold) There was also a good news that you chose the work.

The renowned futurist Alvin Toffler, who was a journalist in the United States, already argued 50 years ago in his book'Future Shock' (1970) that

science fiction should

be treated as

a future sociology

,

not literature,

and

should be taught to children

at

school

.

It was not because of the imagination of science, but because science

fiction novels can expand human thinking and become a platform to think ahead of and think about political, social, psychological, and ethical issues that may be encountered in the future

.

Park Sang-joon, CEO of Seoul SF Archive, also said that in the 21st century, science fiction works that go beyond scientific imagination and add ethical imagination or value subversive imagination will help us to objectively reflect on the present and gain insights that can move toward a better future.

How about starting a difficult time like now, how to live differently, and start thinking about it with a science fiction work that interests you?
