To say that men are mule heads would be insulting.

For mules.

Lady Whistledown's Social Chronicle, June 2, 1813

Why this book?

  • Because the Netflix series released for Christmas is a hit!

Frankly, who would have thought that such a phenomenon would be inspired by historical romance?

Even if historical romances have always been popular!

Who has not read one of those novels in his grandmother's library in secret, one of those timeless ones that you must read at least once in your life.

And then we are here in England and the British family and English nobles have always made us dream in their own way.

  • Because if you love

    Gossip Girl

    and Jane Austen novels,

    this book is for you.

We love the pen of Lady Whistledown which dissects the deeds and gestures of English nobles.

She has a bit of a sour humor, but so fun!

We like to see the period of the Regency other than in novels such as

    Pride and Prejudice

    or

    Reason and Sentiments

    .

It is these cult books that made us discover this period from a "classic" point of view and the author offers us a slightly more "modern" vision.

  • Because heroes have character!

Between Simon who knows what he wants and Daphne who wants to be independent and not a prisoner of society, we have scenes that are sometimes funny, sometimes full of humor.

We hook up with them straight away!

  • Because the Bridgertons are a family of eight children

and who says eight children says… eight novels!

Each is centered on one of them.

This book brings together the story of Daphne, the eldest girl, and Anthony, the eldest boy and heir to the title.

This means that there are still seven novels to discover the whole family and from another angle.

And historical and family sagas, we love it!

The essentials in 2 minutes

The plot.

To the rhythm of balls and receptions, Lady Whistledown tells the romance between Daphne Bridgerton and Simon, the Duke of Hastings.

Languorous waltzes, funny twists and fights keep the company in suspense.

And if heir Bridgerton does it, it promises for the rest of the siblings.

Characters.

The Bridgerton family led by Daphné then Anthony.

Then Simon and Kate, the pairs of the previous characters but also the good English society and the mysterious Lady Whistledown who leads with a master's feather all this little world.

Places.

In England in the various residences like that of Bridgertons or that of the Duke of Hastings.

Typical places full of charms.

The time.

We are in the 19th century, in England, during the period of the Regency.

The author.

A major author of romance, Julia Quinn specializes in writing historical romances.

She likes to shatter the misconception that smart women don't read (and don't write) romance.

This book was read with

great pleasure, mixing laughter and tears.

We like to follow the heroes, their repartees and the codes they try to break in their own way, but also the twists and turns and Lady Whistledown who maintains the mystery of her identity but who tells us the story with humor and playfulness.
