Spain recorded “historic” temperatures overnight from Monday to Tuesday, the mercury dropping to -25.4 ° C.

This complicated snow removal, especially in the capital Madrid, where many streets remained blocked.

Much of the center and east of the country was still covered with snow on Tuesday after the passage of an unprecedented storm.

Called Filomena, the latter also caused heavy rains elsewhere in Spain and caused the death of three people this weekend.

Two homeless dead in Barcelona

While much of the country is now hit by a cold snap, two homeless people were found dead on Monday in Barcelona, according to local authorities.

The bodies showed signs of hypothermia.

In central and eastern Spain, the mercury dropped to -25.4 degrees in a village in the Aragon region, northeast of Madrid, the weather agency AEMET said, in evoking “historic” temperatures.

According to the spokesperson for this agency, it is "possible" that this is one of the coldest nights in the country for "several decades".

With -10.8 ° C, Madrid posted its lowest temperature in half a century, with its Barajas airport even posting -13.2 ° C, AEMET reported.

The government again called on Tuesday the inhabitants of the affected regions not to travel on foot or by car.

"We must continue to be extremely careful" while the weather alert has not been lifted, insisted the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

Emergency rooms full of fall victims

In the capital, three days after historic snowfall, the lack of snowploughs and salt bags continued to be felt.

The main axes were cleared and some bus lines resumed service on Tuesday morning but many side streets remained snow-covered.

However, the metro has been running 24 hours a day since this weekend.

Already under pressure due to the increase in Covid cases, Madrid's hospitals have had to take care of “more than 2,000” patients since Monday who came to the emergency room after a bad fall while the sidewalks and streets have been transformed into skating rinks by the gel.

With the trees threatening to fall under the weight of the snow, the parks also remained closed.

The freezing night caused water cuts in several streets of the capital.

Finally, the problems of supplying supermarkets with fresh produce should end thanks to the reopening of MercaMadrid, the gigantic Madrid wholesale market.

According to the meteorological agency, temperatures are expected to gradually rise in the coming days.
