"The army stormed my home this morning, arrested all my security guards and everyone else they saw around the home," he wrote on Twitter.

At the same time as the military struck, Wine conducted a live radio interview with Kenyan Hot 96 FM.

"I have to end the interview because I see soldiers beating my bodyguards," the politician said in the broadcast.

Challenges the president

Uganda goes to the presidential and parliamentary elections on Thursday, January 14.

Wine then challenges the longtime president and former guerrilla leader Yoweri Musevenbi, who has been in power since 1986.

Dozens of opposition supporters have been killed during the election campaign, and Wine has been arrested repeatedly, often with reference to corona restrictions.
