Every eighth German suffers from irritable bowel symptoms - and the number of people who suffer from symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea or flatulence due to their overly sensitive digestive organs has been increasing for years.

So far there are only theories about why.

Things like hypersensitive intestinal nerves, the wrong foods or intestinal bacteria, stress and of course the influence of genes are discussed as causes of the disease.
