LIVE

One year to the day after the announcement by China of the first death of Covid-19, nearly 2 million people have died from this disease worldwide.

In France, the week that begins Monday is decisive: while the health situation continues to deteriorate, with nearly 16,000 new cases recorded on Sunday and an advanced curfew at 6 p.m. in eight new departments, new restrictions could be adopted in the coming days.

Fear of the arrival of the British variant of Covid-19 is also growing, especially in Marseille.

Follow the evolution of the situation live.

The main information to remember:

  • Nearly 16,000 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded on Sunday by Public Health France

  • The viral situation is considered "worrying" in Marseille, where eight cases of the English variant are now identified

  • The curfew begins at 6 p.m. in 8 new departments, including Bouches-du-Rhône

Will a third confinement be declared?

If nothing is certain for the moment, the word confinement has in any case not been taboo for a long time for the government.

If the epidemic situation worsens, the executive will not hesitate to take "more restrictive" measures.

This could take the form of a national widening of the 6 p.m. curfew, or even a national re-containment.

Jean Castex is due to speak Thursday on this subject.

Advanced curfew in some departments

It is a "difficult but necessary" measure, in the words of Prime Minister Jean Castex.

Thus, the curfew has been brought forward to 6 p.m. in certain departments: Cher, Allier, Côte-d'Or, Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin, as well as Vaucluse, Alpes-de- Haute-Provence and the Bouches-du-Rhône.

The measure, already in place in some territories, comes into force from Sunday.

In total, 22 departments are concerned.

In the Var and Drôme, which were not yet part of the departments envisaged, the curfew is also brought forward to 6 p.m., but only from Tuesday.

The viral situation deemed "worrying" in Marseille

According to Marseille PS mayor Benoît Payan, the viral situation is "worrying" in the city, where seven new cases linked to the English variant of the virus causing the disease have been discovered - eight have been identified in total.

"We must react immediately, we want us to get out of the usual patterns of the crisis and do everything to trace, test and isolate urgently all potential carriers of the British strain," urged the councilor.

The prefect of the department, Christophe Mirmand, described the evolution of the epidemic as "unfavorable" and "very fast", at the microphone of Europe 1. He calls for "mobilizing all precautionary measures to allow testing from infectious foci that are identified. "

Véran defends the vaccine strategy

Guest of the

Grand Rendez-vous

on Europe 1 on Sunday, the Minister of Health recognized a "lack of clarity in the explanation of the vaccine campaign" against the coronavirus.

However, this

mea culpa

did not prevent Olivier Véran from defending the French strategy in this area, much criticized for the slowness of its start.

"When I say not to confuse speed and haste, it is not to praise the slowness. It is to say that our goal, at the end of January, to have offered the vaccine and vaccinated more than a million French people. "

And to assure: "We will have ten times more centers than most of our neighbors to avoid the 80-year-old French from queuing for three hours outside in the middle of winter and traveling 150 kilometers to be vaccinated."

Asked about the British variant of Covid-19, the Minister of Health then indicated that "several clusters have been identified in France", in particular one in Marseille.

But as regards possible new sources of contagion of this strain - which would be up to "70% more contagious" - Olivier Véran admitted "not being able to respond" at this stage.

Nonetheless, based on "extremely preliminary data to be taken with the utmost caution", he explains that of the "first 1,000 positive cases" suspected of being of the variant, "genetic sequencing" revealed "about 10 cases of variant. That is to say around 1% ".

Nearly 16,000 new contaminations in 24 hours

Nearly 16,000 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the past 24 hours, according to data released Sunday by Public Health France, a figure still far from the government's target of going down to 5,000 cases per day.

The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 was 15,944 on Sunday, up from 20,177 on Saturday.

Since Tuesday, the average number of contaminations has been 18,000 per day.

This data has varied a lot since mid-December, oscillating between 3,000 and more than 25,000.

The positivity rate, which measures the percentage of people positive for Covid-19, continues to increase to 6.5% against 6.3% on Saturday.

It was still at 5.2% a week ago.

Belgium crosses the 20,000 dead mark, Germany that of 40,000

Belgium, one of the countries most bereaved in the world by the pandemic in relation to its number of inhabitants, on Sunday crossed the threshold of 20,000 deaths linked to the new coronavirus, more than half of which concern residents of retirement homes.

This country of 11.5 million inhabitants has recorded 662,694 cases of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, and 20,038 deaths (against 19,992 on Saturday), according to figures published by the public health institute Sciensano.

In addition, Germany has recorded 465 deaths from the Covid-19 disease in the last 24 hours, bringing the total since the start of the pandemic to 40,343.

At least 1.9 million dead worldwide

Since Beijing announced just a year ago, on January 11, 2020, of the first death of Covid-19, a man who was shopping in a Wuhan market, the pandemic has killed more than 1.926 million in the world, according to a report established Sunday by AFP from official sources.

The United States is the most affected country in terms of both deaths and deaths (over 374,008).

Brazil (203,100 deaths), India (nearly 151,000), Mexico (more than 133,200) and the United Kingdom (more than 80,800) follow.

The global death toll is globally underestimated.

It is based on the daily reports from the national health authorities.
